Mykhailo Molchanov, the winemaker, and his family have transformed their winery into a symbol of resistance and perseverance. The family's journey began when Russia's full-scale invasion struck in February 2022. They abandoned their city home in Mykolaiv and sought refuge at their winery, only to find themselves caught between the lines of battle. Despite the challenges, the Molchanovs have expanded their acreage since the invasion, a testament to their optimism and belief in the future. Mykhailo, inspired by Italian wine growers, sees potential in Ukrainian wine, which is largely unknown outside the country. They grow a variety of grape types, including native Ukrainian grapes like telti kuruk and odesa black, and dream of attracting tourists to their winery in happier times.
However, the war's impact extends beyond the Molchanov family. Olha Kashchenko, a former wine tour guide, lost her vineyard and home in Kherson due to the conflict. She now seeks refuge at the Molchanov winery, planning to produce wine using grapes sourced from other regions. The scale of loss in Ukraine is devastating, with historical wineries like Prince Trubetskoy being destroyed by bombing.
The Ukrainian wine industry, once thriving with 68,000 hectares of land planted with vines, has suffered significant setbacks. Svitlana Tsybak, the president of the Ukrainian Association of Craft Winemakers, notes a decline to 15,000 hectares, with many vineyards lost to occupation and natural disasters. Large growers have opted for more reliable crops like sunflowers and wheat, leaving wine production to rely on hope and the belief in a future beyond the war.
Despite these challenges, a remarkable 82 craft wineries have emerged since 2022, mostly in safer regions.
