Tesla is hiring factory workers and sales staff to operate its 'Robotaxi' service, offering extra hours and pay to drive its fleet in the Bay Area. The company has registered 1,655 cars in San Francisco for the service. AI operators, who sit in the driver's seat, actively monitor the vehicle while Tesla's Full Self-Driving software is engaged, taking over when needed. Tesla plans to eventually release the software as a fully autonomous service. The extra operators will help expand ride-hailing availability in the Bay Area. Tesla has also moved some sales staff to similar operator roles in Las Vegas and Phoenix. Adding more operators could help Tesla speed up service, as wait times spiked after the Robotaxi app's public launch in September. Tesla completed the self-certification process for service in Nevada and Arizona last month, but has yet to apply for a license to launch a commercial service in Nevada. The company has a permit from the Arizona Department of Transportation to operate commercially in the state. Tesla launched its Bay Area ride-hailing service in August, operating with a driver due to California's stricter regulations. The company has 1,655 vehicles and 798 drivers registered for its ride-hailing service in California. Tesla is hiring AI operators across the US, including in Illinois, Massachusetts, Colorado, and Texas, with around-the-clock shifts and a salary range of $25 to $30 per hour. The role requires an FSD test drive, a valid driver's license, and passing a drug test and background check. Tesla plans to expand its service to eight to 10 metropolitan areas by the end of the year, testing in several cities across the country.
