In a troubling case that has drawn significant attention, a man has been found guilty of stalking the well-known comedian Joe Lycett near his residence in Birmingham. This unsettling chapter unfolded on the same street in Kings Heath, where both individuals were neighbors during the period of harassment.
CCTV footage presented in court revealed Egerton vocally expressing himself outside Mr. Lycett's home, leading concerned neighbors to alert the police. In one particularly alarming incident, he was recorded shouting, "I hope to make your life a little more light-hearted tomorrow,” which raised serious concerns about his intentions.
The defendant claimed that his messages to the comedian were an attempt to seek help, stating, "He's got no reason to not send someone round to check that I'm OK.” He further argued that Mr. Lycett’s lack of engagement with him had triggered a series of events that escalated into harassment. Instead, he hoped that the defendant would receive the necessary help and support moving forward.
As part of the judicial process, the judge mandated that a psychiatric evaluation be conducted and required Egerton to collaborate with a probation officer prior to his sentencing. Following this decision, he was released on bail under strict conditions, including a prohibition from entering part of the street where Mr. Lycett resides and a complete ban on any form of contact with him.
