Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, have recently been handed additional prison sentences in a case concerning fraudulent activities related to state gifts. This situation has captivated the attention of many, not only due to the figures involved but also because of the broader implications for Pakistan's political landscape.
The couple was found guilty of violating regulations regarding state gifts after Bushra Bibi received an extravagant jewelry set from Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during a state visit back in 2021. This verdict comes at a time when Khan is already serving a prison sentence stemming from previous convictions. The new penalties include a ten-year term for criminal breach of trust and seven years for criminal misconduct, along with a hefty fine. Notably, these sentences will run concurrently with any prior sentences, effectively lengthening their time behind bars without adding excessive years.
Khan has continuously asserted that the charges against him are driven by political motives. His attorney, Salman Safdar, emphasized that neither Khan nor his wife were present during the court proceedings and that their legal team received notification of the sentencing rather late, which raises questions about the transparency of the judicial process. Safdar confirmed intentions to appeal the ruling in the higher courts, suggesting that this legal battle is far from over.
This particular case, often referred to as Toshakhana 2, revolves around the Bulgari jewelry gifted to Bushra Bibi. According to the regulations governing state gifts in Pakistan, such items should be deposited with the Toshakhana, the state treasury. However, politicians are permitted to purchase these gifts back at a reduced price. Allegations claim that Khan engaged a private company to downplay the value of the jewelry before buying it back, leading to accusations of fraud.
Alongside their sentences, the couple has been fined more than 16 million Pakistani rupees, which is equivalent to approximately £42,600. Interestingly, Khan has previously been acquitted in a different Toshakhana-related case, hinting at the complex and often controversial nature of legal proceedings involving high-profile politicians in Pakistan.
In addition to the charges tied to the jewelry case, Khan faces numerous other legal challenges, including terrorism allegations stemming from violent protests that erupted on May 9, 2023, following his detention at that time. Once a prominent figure in Pakistan’s political sphere, Khan served as the prime minister until April 2022 when he was removed through a vote of no confidence.
Despite being incarcerated, Khan remains a vocal critic of the current government and the military, particularly targeting Field Marshal Asim Munir, the army chief, whom he has labeled a tyrant on social media. Though Khan has been largely absent from public view, his accounts continue to post messages that resonate with his supporters, indicating that he is still actively engaging with the political discourse from behind bars.
After a lengthy period without visitors, Khan’s family successfully campaigned for access, allowing his sister to visit him in early December. Following her visit, Khan's account shared a post criticizing the army chief, which underscores the ongoing tension between them. Since that visit, however, Khan has not been permitted to see family members again, raising concerns about his treatment in custody.
According to jail officials, Khan and his wife were reportedly present for the announcement of their verdict; however, the absence of media coverage during this significant moment leaves room for speculation. The judge did express leniency in sentencing, citing Khan’s age as a factor, which could invite further debate regarding the judicial system's treatment of aging defendants.
