Game Industry Crisis: Layoffs and the Future of Development (2026)

A recent survey by GDC has revealed a grim reality for the US games industry, with one-third of surveyed workers laid off in the last two years. The report, which included data from over 2300 respondents, highlights the harsh impact of the industry's current state. 33% of US respondents had been laid off in the past 24 months, while 28% of industry workers worldwide reported similar experiences. 17% of those surveyed had been laid off in the past year alone, with the report noting that the total number of layoffs could be higher due to multiple layoffs within the same period. The survey also revealed that almost half of the respondents (48%) were still seeking employment after being laid off, and 36% of those laid off one to two years ago had yet to find new jobs in the industry. The report further noted that over 450 respondents had experienced company changes such as acquisitions, closures, or mergers in the past year, with 31% of those people also reporting layoffs. Game designers, including narrative designers, were the most affected, with 20% of surveyed game designers laid off in the last 12 months. Conversely, those in business operations and services reported the lowest percentage of layoffs, at 8%. The reasons for these layoffs varied, with 43% citing company restructuring, 32% due to project cancellations, and 38% due to budget cuts and market conditions. One respondent shared a critical perspective, stating that executives who have never worked as developers are making decisions that lead to layoffs, expecting the industry to continue generating infinite profits. However, some respondents also noted that employers are working to retain staff despite ongoing challenges. The survey's findings are particularly relevant given recent events, such as Ubisoft's announcement of a major organizational reset, which included delays, closures, and cancellations of projects. This trend of layoffs and industry changes highlights the need for a deeper understanding of the industry's dynamics and the impact of leadership decisions on workers.
