We’re thrilled to give you an exclusive first look at Animol, a film that’s already sparking conversations ahead of its screening in the Perspectives section at this year’s Berlinale. Directed by Walters, known for his work in Adolescence, and written by Nick Love (The Football Factory), the film promises to be a raw, unflinching portrayal of life inside a young offender institution.
Here’s the official synopsis: Troy (played by Tut Nyuot) is thrown into a world where gangs, loyalty, and violence reign supreme. From day one, he’s tested at every turn. His volatile cellmate adds to the chaos, forcing Troy to navigate daily threats and power struggles. Amid the oppression, an unspoken bond with another inmate offers a glimmer of solace—but this connection soon becomes a dangerous liability.
Meanwhile, Troy’s welfare officer, Claypole, tries to reconnect him with his estranged mother, but Troy is increasingly entangled in the institution’s brutal hierarchy. When violence erupts, he’s left isolated, confronting his deepest fears. In a place where survival often means betrayal and trust is a double-edged sword, Troy must decide who he truly is—and who he’s at risk of becoming.
The film boasts a stellar cast, including Tut Nyuot, Vladyslav Baliuk, Sekou Diaby, Ryan Dean, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, and Stephen Graham. Behind the scenes, producers Nick Love, Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor, and Tom Hawkins brought the project to life, with Tasha Back as the Director of Photography. Bankside is handling international sales.
In a powerful statement, Walters—a seasoned actor and musician—shared that stepping behind the camera “felt both inevitable and deeply personal.” He reflected on his own experiences growing up as a young Black man in London, grappling with questions of manhood and identity in the absence of positive role models. Here’s the bold part: Walters didn’t want Animol to be defined solely by despair. Instead, he sought to infuse it with humor, tenderness, and hope, proving that even in the darkest places, humanity endures.

Developed by Film4 in collaboration with Joi Productions, Animol marks a first-time partnership between Sky and Film4 as co-financiers, with additional support from the BFI.
